How to Deal With Nerves

Most of us feel nervous before the entering the unknown. It is a basic human instinct to feel vulnerable with the prospect of the unfamiliar.

Dealing with nerves as a singer is an important skill to learn as we never want to convey to the audience that we are apprehensive, especially when it affects our performance levels.

Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes to handling nerves, it’s a bit like dieting in that respect. However, the more confident you are with your skill-sets, the more proactive you will feel and able to channel this into something more positive.

Warming up will help calm you down! For instance, try finding a private space backstage such as under a stairwell or in a toilet cubicle and go through your warm-up routine. Endeavour to access a calm part of your psyche, feeling a lower centre of gravity within. Feel yourself starting to relax, loosening your throat muscles then engaging your body including your lungs and diaphragm.

Finally, keep as hydrated as you can. In other words, do the basics well.

Prepare fully both mentally and physically and all will be well.
